Giancarlo Scalia

Giancarlo Scalia, Montreal-born pianist, vocal coach, and composer, maintains an active international career with performances across Canada, Europe, the United States, and China. His compositions have been presented throughout North America and Europe.

He has contributed to over 50 opera and theatre productions as musical director, chorus master, and répétiteur for companies including Opéra bouffe du Québec, Opéra de Montréal, the Halifax Summer Opera Festival, Opera Atelier (Toronto), and the Gesellschaft für Musiktheater (Vienna).

A dedicated mentor, Scalia has coached at Concordia University, the Mediterranean Opera Studio & Festival (Sicily), and the École de musique Vincent d’Indy. As a performer, his repertoire spans opera, operetta, musical theatre, and art song, with tours to China and the recording Arie e canzoni (2016).

An Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre, his works have been commissioned by ensembles such as l’Orchestre de la Francophonie and Ensemble Paramirabo, reflecting a style that blends traditional and contemporary idioms. Scalia holds degrees in piano and composition from the Université de Montréal and pursued further studies in Vienna and Italy.
